HOW WE HELP

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a gentle, evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps children express emotions, process experiences, and develop healthy coping skills through play. For children, play is a natural form of communication. While adults often use words to explain how they feel, children may not yet have the emotional vocabulary or confidence to describe difficult thoughts and experiences. Through carefully guided therapeutic play, children can safely communicate feelings, worries, fears, and challenges in a way that feels natural and comfortable to them.

Play therapy provides a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental environment where children can explore their emotions with the support of a trained psychotherapist or play therapist. Sessions are tailored to the child’s developmental stage, personality, and individual needs. The therapeutic relationship itself is central to the process, helping the child feel secure, understood, and valued.

Play therapy can support children experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and social difficulties, including anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, family separation, trauma, bullying, emotional regulation difficulties, school-related stress, behavioural concerns, and social challenges. It can also help children who have experienced significant changes in their lives or who may be struggling to process overwhelming emotions.

Psychotherapy involves an interactive process between the client and psychotherapist with the aim of improving emotional wellbeing and strengthening resilience. Through therapeutic interventions and creative therapeutic techniques, children are supported in understanding themselves, managing emotions more effectively, and developing healthier ways of coping with challenges.

At the heart of our work is the belief that every child deserves to feel heard, supported, and emotionally safe. We understand that seeking therapy for your child can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. Our role is to support both you and your child throughout the journey with compassion, professionalism, and care.

Our Process

We understand that every child and family is unique. For this reason, our approach always begins with getting to know your child, your concerns, and your family’s individual needs.

The first step in the process is an initial meeting with the child’s parent, parents, or guardian. This assessment session allows us to gain a full understanding of the child’s emotional, behavioural, and developmental needs, while also providing parents with an opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have. We explore the child’s background, family circumstances, school experiences, relationships, and any difficulties that may be affecting their wellbeing.

This initial consultation is also an opportunity for us to explain how play therapy works and how it may benefit your child. We understand that parents often arrive with many questions and uncertainties, and we aim to provide reassurance, clarity, and guidance from the very beginning.

Following the assessment, we develop a therapeutic plan tailored specifically to the child’s needs. Sessions are structured in a way that supports emotional safety, trust, and gradual therapeutic progress. Children are encouraged to engage at their own pace, allowing the therapeutic relationship to develop naturally over time.

We know that taking the first step towards therapy can feel difficult for parents. There are often concerns about whether therapy is the right choice, what the process involves, or how a child may respond. Our experienced team is here to guide and support you throughout every stage of the journey. We strive to make the process as comfortable and straightforward as possible for both parents and children.

Once you contact us, we arrange an initial conversation to better understand the support you are seeking and how we can help. This conversation is an important opportunity to get to know each other, discuss any concerns, and answer any questions you may have. If you decide to proceed, we will then arrange your child’s first appointment and begin the therapeutic process together.

Parent Support

We strongly believe that parents and primary caregivers play an essential role in helping children overcome emotional and behavioural challenges. Children thrive when they feel supported not only in therapy sessions but also within their home environment. For this reason, we work closely with parents throughout the play therapy process.

Parent support is an important part of our therapeutic approach. We aim to empower parents with a greater understanding of their child’s emotional world and provide guidance on how to support their child at home during therapy. This collaborative approach helps create consistency and strengthens the child’s sense of safety and connection.

Typically, after approximately six therapy sessions, we arrange a parent review meeting. During this meeting, we provide parents with an update on the child’s therapeutic progress while respecting the child’s confidentiality and emotional safety. We also discuss any changes parents may have observed at home, in school, or within relationships since therapy began.

These review meetings offer valuable opportunities to reflect on the child’s development, discuss ongoing concerns, and explore additional ways parents can continue supporting their child. Often, parents notice positive changes such as improved emotional regulation, increased confidence, better communication, reduced anxiety, or healthier behaviour patterns.

We recognise that parenting can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when a child is struggling emotionally. Our aim is not only to support the child but also to support parents through the process with empathy, understanding, and practical guidance.

Therapeutic Tools & Techniques

During therapy, we use a wide range of engaging and effective therapeutic aids to help children communicate, process emotions, and work through challenges in a safe and supportive way. Children often express themselves more freely through creative and play-based activities than through direct conversation alone.

Some of the therapeutic tools we may use include sand trays, board games, therapeutic flash cards, art materials, role play, sensory items, storytelling techniques, and miniature figures. These therapeutic aids allow children to symbolically express thoughts and feelings that may otherwise feel too difficult or overwhelming to verbalise.

Play therapy recognises that play is a child’s natural language. Through play, children can process difficult experiences, explore relationships, develop emotional awareness, and build healthier coping strategies. The therapeutic environment provides children with a safe space to explore emotions without fear of judgement or pressure.

Psychotherapy involves interactive processes between the client and psychotherapist designed to improve emotional wellbeing and strengthen relationships. We employ a range of therapeutic techniques aimed at supporting children’s mental health, emotional resilience, and social development. In some cases, this may also involve supporting family relationships and communication patterns.

Most importantly, we believe that children recover and grow best when the important adults in their lives are actively involved and supported throughout the therapeutic process. We therefore work collaboratively with parents, schools, GPs, and other relevant mental health professionals where appropriate to ensure your child receives the best possible care and support.

How We Can Help

Our goal is to help children feel emotionally safe, understood, and supported while developing the skills and confidence needed to navigate life’s challenges. Play therapy can help children experiencing emotional difficulties, behavioural challenges, anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, family separation, social difficulties, low self-esteem, and many other concerns.

We understand that bringing your child to therapy can feel like a big step. As parents ourselves, we recognise how difficult it can be to watch your child struggle and how uncertain the process may feel at first. Please know that you are not alone. We are here to support both you and your child with care, compassion, and professional guidance.

Taking the first step can often be the hardest part. Parents frequently have many questions and concerns about therapy, and this is completely understandable. Our team is here to answer your questions, explain the process clearly, and ensure you feel comfortable and informed from the beginning.

We aim to make accessing support as easy as possible. There are several ways to contact us, and we are always happy to discuss your concerns and guide you through the next steps. Our focus is on creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive experience for every child and family who comes through our doors.
